Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, has taken a strong stance against Israeli settlers who have violently assaulted Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Wong announced that financial sanctions and travel bans will be imposed on seven individuals responsible for atrocities including beatings, sexual assault, and torture resulting in serious injury and death.
In her statement, Wong emphasized the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank under international law and called on Israel to recognize the importance of its standing in the international community.
The Australian government’s actions follow similar sanctions imposed by other countries, including Britain, the United States, Canada, and Japan. Israel’s embassy in Australia condemned the violence, stating that the country is committed to bringing perpetrators to justice.
The move by Australia comes in the wake of the International Court of Justice’s demand for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories promptly. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 500 Palestinians this year alone, highlighting the urgent need for peace and justice in the region.
