Pro-Palestinian Protesters in Australia Urge Sanctions Against Israel
Pro-Palestinian protesters in Australia called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government to impose sanctions against Israel for its actions in the Gaza Strip. Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside Sydney’s Town Hall during the Labor Party conference, displaying banners with messages like “Albanese blood on your hands” and “Free Palestine.”
They demanded government condemnation and sanctions on Israel, accusing it of causing harm to Palestinians and being complicit in genocide. Some members of the Labor Party have even resigned over the Australian policy towards Gaza. Despite calls for a cease-fire, Canberra does not recognize Palestinian statehood.
In a show of solidarity, protesters waved Palestinian flags and emphasized the need for Australia to take a stronger stance against Israel’s actions. The issue has sparked debate within political circles, with individuals like former Labor Auburn-Lidcombe branch vice-president Mohamad Assoum and Senator Fatima Payman leaving the party in disagreement with its approach.
