Venezuela bars Panama plane with senior politicians

Former Latin American Presidents Denied Permission to Fly to Venezuela for Elections

A plane carrying several former Latin American presidents, including ex-Panamanian president Mireya Moscoso, was denied permission to take off from Tocumen airport in Panama to observe Venezuela’s upcoming elections. President Jose Raul Mulino cited the blockade of Venezuelan airspace as the reason for the denial.

What Happened?

Former presidents Miguel Angel Rodriguez, Jorge Quiroga, and Vicente Fox were also on board the plane, scheduled to fly to Venezuela together with Moscoso. All four former leaders are vocal critics of current Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Panama’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Venezuelan representative for an explanation regarding the incident. Sunday’s elections in Venezuela will see Maduro facing opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. Despite lagging behind in polls, Maduro has a firm grip on state power, while Urrutia represents a diverse political alliance.

Former president Vicente Fox shared his support for Venezuela on social media, expressing solidarity with the country amidst the unfolding events.
