US arrests Mexican drug lord

Breaking news: Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the notorious drug lord and leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, has been arrested by US federal agents in El Paso, Texas. At 76 years old, Zambada co-founded the cartel with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently imprisoned in the US. Alongside Zambada, Guzman’s son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, was also apprehended, according to the US Justice Department.

Zambada was charged in February with a conspiracy to produce and distribute fentanyl, a highly potent drug contributing to the US opioid crisis. US Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the Sinaloa cartel’s violent and powerful nature, emphasizing the importance of holding its leaders accountable.

The DEA had placed a $15 million reward for Zambada’s capture, underscoring the significance of his arrest. During El Chapo’s trial in 2019, Zambada was accused of corrupting the Mexican government to evade prosecution, a claim rejected by Guzman’s defense.
