In Luanda, Angola, a disturbing series of unexplained deaths has sent shockwaves through the community. Over a weekend, nine bodies bearing signs of violence, such as gunshot wounds and signs of asphyxiation, were discovered, adding to the unresolved cases dating back to 2017.
Residents like Eva Adelaide from Kawelele reported hearing gunshots before the grim discovery, sparking fear and insecurity. The Association for Justice, Peace, and Democracy (AJPD) has condemned the lack of action from government authorities in investigating these incidents.
President of AJPD, Serra Bango, stressed the immediate need for intervention to address the public safety crisis. The ongoing uninvestigated deaths highlight the deep trust issues in Angolan institutions, necessitating transparent law enforcement and accountability mechanisms.
Background
In recent years, Angola has faced a troubling pattern of uninvestigated murders and excessive force by security forces. Reports from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have highlighted unlawful killings and human rights abuses, eroding public trust in the government. Urgent international attention and domestic reforms are needed to ensure justice and protect citizens’ rights.
