Britain Decides Against Questioning ICC’s Warrant for Netanyahu
Britain announced on Friday that it would no longer pursue efforts to challenge the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. This decision came after the ICC’s prosecutor requested warrants for them and three Hamas leaders in May for alleged war crimes.
A senior Israeli official expressed disappointment, calling the decision a mistake that goes against truth and justice. In June, the British government, led by conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, initially filed a request to examine the ICC’s jurisdiction in the matter. However, the decision has now been postponed.
The shift in British policy under the new Labour government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggests potential changes in the country’s stance towards Israel. This change could impact how Britain engages with Israel in conflicts, according to reports.
Ultimately, the government spokesperson confirmed that Britain would not pursue the proposal, citing that the matter should be decided by the court.
