With 72 townships in Fujian experiencing heavy rainfalls and the typhoon expected to hit Jiangxi province next, the impact of Gaemi is predicted to affect up to 10 provinces, including heavily populated Henan. The Chinese meteorological bureau is anticipating heavy rains starting Friday night, with the storm’s reach extending all the way to Jilin and Liaoning provinces, which are still recovering from previous storms.
Scientists warn that global warming is exacerbating tropical storms, making them more intense. In Taiwan, Gaemi has already caused widespread damage, with over 700 injuries and several fatalities. In the Philippines, the storm has claimed 32 lives and led Manila to declare a state of calamity due to severe flooding and a marine tanker sinking in rough seas.
