Both the Obama and Trump administrations brought major disruptions to American foreign policy. Obama’s post-racial vision and pacifist approach emboldened rivals, while Trump’s transactional policies weakened America’s global standing. Biden’s return to a more traditional liberal foreign policy was well received in Asia. However, his administration has struggled to present impactful economic initiatives in the region.
The potential for a second Trump presidency raises concerns in Asia due to his aggressive “America First” strategy and protectionist measures. The politicization of American bureaucracy under Trump could hinder competent foreign policy. On the other hand, a Harris presidency may face challenges in asserting global authority and grappling with an increasingly contentious geopolitical landscape.
America’s deteriorating domestic politics will further tarnish its moral leadership and democratic credentials. Despite its flaws, Biden’s foreign policy may be looked upon nostalgically by allies and rivals in the years to come.
