South Australia’s crackdown on distracted driving has led to the detection of almost 31,000 motorists using their phones in just one month, with new cameras capturing offenders at various locations across the state.
Despite a grace period for offenders to rectify their behavior, early figures revealed a staggering 30,754 warning letters sent out. Some drivers were caught multiple times, with three motorists facing fines of about $12,500 each for using their phones 19 times.
Police expressed disappointment at the continued irresponsible behavior by drivers and emphasized the dangers of using mobile phones while driving, citing distraction as a significant factor in road crashes.
As of September 19, motorists caught using their phones will face a $556 fine and three demerit points, as authorities aim to curb this dangerous behavior on South Australian roads.
