Presented by PML-N member Raheela Khadim Hussain, the resolution highlights the detrimental impact of ‘digital terrorism’ on the political and social fabric of the country. It points out that these cyber attacks target institutions, harass officers, and tarnish the nation’s image on an international level.
One specific incident mentioned in the resolution is the circulation of a fake video attributed to Uzma Bukhari, which caused unnecessary turmoil. The resolution calls for stricter measures to combat digital terrorists and ensure they face severe punishment. Interestingly, the federal government has taken steps to address this issue by establishing special courts in Islamabad under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), 2016.
This proactive move aims to prosecute those involved in spreading ‘anti-state propaganda’ through digital channels. By consulting with the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court, the government is taking concrete steps to curb the influence of digital terrorism in the virtual realm.
