The Knesset has approved a decision giving extremist Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir the responsibility to demolish homes in the Arab community within the 1948 lands under the pretext of unlicensed construction.
The Israeli parliament (Knesset) passed the government’s decision transferring the Land Authority responsibility to Ben-Gvir, with 55 Knesset members in support and 51 opposed on Thursday night.
The move follows an agreement made with ultra-Orthodox parties, allowing Ben-Gvir to enforce illegal construction regulations.
Implications and Concerns
As Ben-Gvir assumes powers previously held by Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich, concerns have been raised over the constitutionality of the decision and its potential violation of individual rights.
The decision has international implications, especially after the recent ICJ ruling condemning Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as unlawful.
The Peace Now organization reports a significant increase in land appropriations by the Israeli government, marking the largest in decades.
