The Kano State government is facing a dire situation in its education sector as 4.5 million out of 10 million pupils in public schools are sitting on the bare floor during lessons. Commissioner of Education, Umar Haruna, revealed that over N60 billion is needed to address the issue and improve the conditions of the schools. He expressed concern over the fact that more than 80% of schools are currently not suitable for teaching and learning.
Haruna blamed the previous administration led by Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje for the state of disrepair in public schools, accusing them of neglect and mismanagement. However, he praised Governor Abba Yusuf for declaring a state of emergency in education and increasing the budget for the sector.
The government plans to start the revival process with Government College Kano by providing necessary resources and renovating infrastructure. Haruna is optimistic about transforming Kano into a hub of learning once again.
