Italy appoints ambassador to Syria amidst crisis

Italy Appoints Syria Ambassador, Gains International Attention

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the appointment of an ambassador to Syria, marking a significant step towards highlighting the country’s situation on the global stage. Italy is the first G7 nation to re-establish diplomatic relations with Damascus since the start of the Syrian civil war, which began 13 years ago. The decision to withdraw embassy staff in 2012 was made in protest against the violence carried out by Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Stefano Ravagnan, previously the Foreign Ministry’s special envoy for Syria, has been named the new ambassador and will soon assume his duties. Italy, along with seven other EU nations, has called for a more proactive approach towards addressing the crisis in Syria, given the humanitarian and economic challenges the country is facing. Tajani emphasized the importance of engaging more actively with Syria and turning the spotlight on its challenges.

Currently, six EU embassies are operational in Damascus, showing Italy’s commitment to addressing the crisis in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on Italy’s diplomatic efforts in Syria.
