Heavy rains in Japan led to rivers bursting their banks, causing at least four people to go missing. Around 200,000 people were asked to evacuate due to exceptional rainfall in northern Japan. Public broadcaster NHK reported that 4,000 people were moved to shelters, while landslides and flooded roads were seen in video footage.
Some roads and bullet trains were suspended as a result. In Japan’s northwestern regions, Yamagata prefecture experienced record rainfall, with Shinjo recording 389 millimeters and Sakata 289 millimeters in 24 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency expects continued heavy rain in the next three days.
One person has been reported dead, and four are missing in Akita and Yamagata prefectures. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the military joining in Yamagata. More than 3,000 houses were without electricity, and over 1,000 lacked running water.
