Greece has formally approved an offer to purchase 20 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the United States as part of a significant defense overhaul. The purchase is aimed at enhancing Greece’s defense capabilities in the region.
The Defense Minister mentioned that the purchase of these fifth-generation jets will act as a powerful deterrent in the surrounding area. The delivery of the jets is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the option to buy an additional 20 F-35 jets as part of the deal.
This military modernization program is considered one of the most significant in decades for Greece, following years of financial challenges and tensions with neighboring countries, especially Turkey. The purchase of these jets will strengthen Greece’s air capabilities, along with the acquisition of French-made Rafale fighter jets.
Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35 jets, expressed their commitment to supporting Greece’s sovereignty and operational capabilities. The deal also includes various services and equipment to further enhance Greece’s defense.
