A former deputy chair (South) of the Labour Party (LP), Callistus Okafor, has declared himself as the new chairman of the party. Okafor made this declaration at a press conference in Abuja, citing a 2018 federal high court judgment that has not been followed.
In 2018, there was a leadership battle in the LP involving the late Abdulkadir Salam and a group led by Salisu Mohammed. The judge, Gabriel Kolawole, ruled that an “inclusive” national convention should be convened, which was not carried out. As a result, Julius Abure became the national chairman of LP.
Okafor emphasized the need for a fresh convention to address the party’s leadership structure and announced himself as the acting chairman. He stated that the aim is to reconcile all aggrieved members and redefine political leadership in Nigeria. This intervention marks a pivotal resolution in the long legal battle for the party’s soul.
