Bangladesh has extended its curfew with a nine-hour pause on Friday and Saturday as part of a crackdown on violence during student protests. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan announced the decision, stating that the curfew in Dhaka and three other cities will continue, but there will be a pause from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Protesting students are demanding a nine-point list of reforms, including the banning of the Chhatra League and the prosecution of those responsible for protester deaths.
The death toll has reached at least 204 since July 16, but the government has not released an official casualty report. Police have arrested over 5,500 people, including opposition party members, and more arrests are expected. The government imposed a blackout and cut internet services during the protests, with broadband services partially restored but mobile internet still unavailable.
The student protests initially focused on reforming the quota system for government jobs but escalated when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina labeled protesters as “razakar.” The situation remains tense as authorities continue their crackdown on violence and dissent.
