The Jewish National Fund Canada is facing a challenge as the Canadian Revenue Agency has revoked its charitable status due to an unacceptable original charitable object from 1967. In response, the JNF has launched a legal challenge in the Federal Court of Appeal against the CRA’s decision. Despite passing five audits over the years, the CRA based its decision on a 2014 audit, which the JNF deems unjust.
The 1967 charter of the organization aimed to provide employment for indigent laborers in Israel, but the CRA deemed it unacceptable. JNF leaders suspect anti-Zionist or antisemitic motives within the CRA influenced the decision. They believe that bias played a role in the revocation of their charitable status.
While the legal battle continues, JNF Canada remains committed to its mission and will continue organizing events, fundraising campaigns, and delegations to Israel. Despite the challenges they face, the organization is determined to uphold its values and support the causes it believes in.
