UK Drops Efforts to Challenge ICC on Israeli Arrest Warrants
The UK has announced that it will no longer pursue efforts to question the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction in issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. This decision came after the ICC Prosecutor requested the arrest warrants in May for alleged war crimes.
Initially, the UK had filed a request to provide written observations on the court’s jurisdiction over Israeli nationals. However, with the election of a new government led by the Labour Party, this proposal was not pursued. The UK’s longstanding position is that this matter should be decided by the court.
The conflict in Palestine has resulted in significant casualties, with thousands killed and injured. The ongoing Israeli onslaught has left Gaza in ruins, with a blockade exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Israel faces accusations of genocide, with the International Court of Justice ordering the immediate halt of military operations in Rafah.
