Australia, Canada, New Zealand urge immediate Gaza cease-fire

Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are calling for an “urgent” cease-fire in Gaza amidst the ongoing Israeli war on the Palestinian coastal enclave. In a joint statement, the three nations expressed concern over the “catastrophic” situation in Gaza and urged for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The statement also criticized Hamas for an attack on October 7, 2023, and called on Israel to heed the concerns of the international community. The nations emphasized the need to protect civilians and increase humanitarian aid to address the dire situation in Gaza.

While advocating for the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law, the statement rejected any future role for Hamas in governing Gaza. It came after various Palestinian groups, including Hamas and Fatah, signed the Beijing Declaration to establish an interim national government for post-war Gaza.

The escalating tensions on the border with Lebanon were also highlighted, warning of the risks posed to civilians in both Lebanon and Israel. The international community continues to condemn Israel’s offensive on Gaza, which has led to numerous casualties and widespread destruction.

Accusations of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice underscore the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and an immediate halt to military operations in Gaza.
