The Prime Minister of India selected ‘Moidams’ from Assam as the country’s nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for 2023-24. This marks the first cultural property from the Northeast to receive this prestigious recognition. The decision was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in India.
Assam’s Chief Minister expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister’s initiative, highlighting the significance of ‘Moidams’ in representing the rich heritage of the Tai-Ahom community. With this inclusion, Assam now boasts its third UNESCO World Heritage Site, following Kaziranga and Manas National Parks.
The ‘Moidams’ in Charaideo are an integral part of the burial tradition of the Ahom dynasty, showcasing a blend of deep spiritual beliefs and architectural prowess. The nomination process, which began in 2014, culminated in making ‘Moidams’ a part of the coveted list after nine years.
