A group advocating for survivors of sexual abuse in schools run by the Spiritan order has expressed a “cautious welcome” to reports that the Government may establish a statutory inquiry into the matter. They have supported over 300 victims/survivors of sexual abuse in Spiritan schools and stressed the urgent need for justice.

Restore Together has highlighted the long-lasting impact of abuse on survivors and emphasized the importance of ensuring immediate access to justice. They have reached out to Minister for Education Norma Foley to discuss the terms of reference for the potential inquiry and have urged that any delays in existing support programs for survivors be avoided.

The group is advocating for a structured inquiry that addresses individual circumstances swiftly while also examining systemic issues. They believe that justice delayed is justice denied, and are calling for continued support for programs aimed at providing healing and closure for victims/survivors.

The Minister for Education has received a substantial report on historical sexual abuse in schools run by religious orders and intends to publish it in the Autumn after consultation with colleagues and the Attorney General.
