ADB Approves $400 million Loan for Flood Affected Areas in Sindh Province

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $400 million concessional loan to support the reconstruction of houses and community infrastructure in Pakistan’s Sindh province following the devastating floods in 2022. The Sindh Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project aims to rehabilitate flood-damaged houses, infrastructure, and support livelihood recovery with a focus on enhancing resilience against climate change-induced hazards.

This project is part of ADB’s commitment to provide $1.5 billion in total assistance from 2023 to 2025 for Pakistan’s flood recovery. Director General Yevgeniy Zhukov emphasized the importance of rebuilding homes and restoring communities in Sindh, which suffered the most damage from the floods. With around 2.1 million houses affected, the project will provide cash grants for the reconstruction of houses, infrastructure, livestock, and small enterprises.

ADB’s support aims to promote community-led climate resilience strategies and disaster risk management. By coordinating with other development partners, the project aligns with the government’s resilient rehabilitation strategy and will enhance operational capabilities in procurement and financial management.
