The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $400 million concessional loan to aid in the reconstruction of homes and community infrastructure in Sindh following the devastating floods of 2022. The floods, caused by monsoon rains, impacted one-third of Pakistan, affecting over 33 million individuals and claiming the lives of 1,700 people. With nearly eight million people displaced, many still reside in temporary shelters.
The loan will support the Sindh Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project, focusing on rebuilding flood-damaged houses and infrastructure, enhancing livelihood recovery, and strengthening community resilience against natural hazards. The project aims to reconstruct 250,000 houses with resilient designs and provide essential infrastructure like drinking water facilities, sanitation, and renewable energy solutions for 100,000 households.
ADB’s Director General for Central and West Asia, Yevgeniy Zhukov, emphasized the importance of this project in aiding the recovery efforts in Sindh, the worst affected province. The bank’s commitment to provide $1.5 billion in total assistance from 2023 to 2025 demonstrates its dedication to supporting Pakistan’s flood recovery.
This initiative is part of ADB’s broader efforts to promote climate resilience and disaster risk management strategies in Asia and the Pacific region. Through collaboration with other development partners, the project aims to rebuild communities, enhance climate resilience, and support the government’s recovery priorities.\
