Activist demands transparency in elections as NEC pushes for December date

A political activist and citizens in Eastern Equatoria State are demanding clarity from the government regarding the December 2024 General Elections. The South Sudanese Network for Democracy and Elections (SSuNDE) expressed concerns about delays in implementing key issues from the 2018 peace agreement necessary for peaceful elections.

With voter registration yet to begin, time is running out as elections should be six months away. John Baptist Olara of SSuNDE urged the government to be transparent about the election process to maintain trust among citizens.

Residents like Flora Adudu Joseph Ojuku in Torit doubt the elections will happen without a census, while Rev. Solomon Oryem Abalang criticized the lack of citizen consultation. Despite citizen concerns, NEC chairperson Professor Abednego Akok confirmed the elections will proceed on schedule.

While facing delays in voter registration, Prof. Akok assured the public that necessary changes will be made to ensure a successful election. He urged citizens to participate in the electoral process and choose leaders wisely.
