Two top leaders of Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel, Ismael Zambada Garcia and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, have been captured in the United States. Attorney General Merrick Garland called the cartel one of the world’s most violent drug trafficking organizations.
Zambada and Guzman face various charges related to leading the cartel’s criminal operations, including fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks. This arrest deals another blow to the Sinaloa cartel, following the capture of El Chapo’s sons who inherited control after his imprisonment.
Zambada, a key figure in Mexican drug trafficking history, has managed to evade justice for years despite his involvement in the cartel’s activities. The United States had offered a $15 million reward for his capture. The victims of cartel violence include rival gang members, security personnel, and journalists, with over 450,000 deaths since the government’s anti-cartel campaign in 2006.
