A major cyber espionage operation conducted by North Korean hackers has been exposed by British, American, and South Korean intelligence agencies. The operation, led by a group known as Andariel, has targeted organizations worldwide to steal sensitive data for military and nuclear programs.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) issued a joint warning with the FBI, NSA, Pentagon, and South Korean intelligence and police agencies. Andariel has hacked defense, aerospace, nuclear, and engineering agencies in South Korea, the UK, and US, as well as extorted money from US hospitals to fund further espionage.
The US Department of State is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Rim Jong Hyok, allegedly associated with Andariel. The NCSC believes Andariel, part of North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, poses an ongoing threat globally. Initially identified in 2017, Andariel has been focused on attacking South Korean businesses and government agencies for profit.
