Unveiling Gramsci’s Insights on Societal Change Amid Ongoing Chaos in the West

By Ramzy Baroud

I find it important to reflect on Gramsci’s understanding of the process of change in society due to the ongoing chaos underway in various western countries.

Antonio Gramsci, though not a professional philosopher, brought a refreshing perspective to intellectual discourse by championing the cause of the ‘subaltern’ classes, particularly the working class.

He posited that everyone possesses intellectual faculties for rational thinking, but the distinction lies in whether individuals assume the function of intellectuals within society.

Gramsci’s concept of intellectualism emphasizes the role of intellectuals in responding to society’s collective needs, driving change through class struggles that extend to the cultural, ideological, and political spheres.

Regarding societal transformation, Gramsci highlighted the significance of organic intellectuals representing marginalized classes in shaping cultural hegemony required for lasting change.

The present chaos in Western countries prompts reflection on Gramsci’s ideas, underscoring the need to navigate the complexities of contemporary political landscapes with an understanding of cultural hegemony and the dynamics of societal change. The ‘Age of Monsters’ has begun, signaling a period of deep polarization, conflict, and the quest for new forces of change.
