A recent study from Stanford University has revealed a growing trend of ethnic Chinese scientists leaving America to return to China due to increased pressure from the US government’s “China Initiative”. This initiative, launched in 2018 to combat economic espionage, has inadvertently led to the prosecution of academics and scientists of Chinese descent.
The number of departures has risen steadily, with 2,621 Chinese scientists leaving the US in 2021, up from 900 in 2010. Of those leaving, 67% chose to relocate to mainland China and Hong Kong. The study also highlighted the negative impact of the China Initiative on scientific collaboration and academic careers, with many scientists feeling fearful and unsafe in the US.
Despite these challenges, the majority of respondents expressed a desire to contribute to US leadership in science and technology. It is clear that in order to retain and attract scientific talent, the US must create a more welcoming and supportive environment for research and collaboration.
