The spokesperson of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) recently addressed the issue of inadequate firearm storage facilities in the country, leading to poor management and control of firearms. Major General Lul Ruai Koang highlighted that since gaining independence in 2011, South Sudan has struggled with insufficient storage facilities, resulting in soldiers keeping their guns at home. The country inherited only three storage facilities from Sudan, causing challenges in accommodating the large number of firearms. Gen. Ruai emphasized that this situation has made it difficult to control the proliferation of illegal firearms, leading to issues such as random shootings and malpractices among servicemen.
Despite these challenges, Gen. Ruai acknowledged efforts to improve the situation, mentioning that they have made progress in controlling random shootings compared to years past. The lack of proper storage facilities in South Sudan has posed significant problems in ensuring the responsible use of firearms by the military. It is crucial for the government to address this issue to prevent further incidents involving illegal firearms and promote safety and security within the country.
