A Russian man, identified only as “K,” was arrested in France for allegedly planning to destabilize the Paris Olympics. Le Monde reported that he is an intelligence officer for Moscow who worked undercover as a chef for over a decade in France. French prosecutors stated that he was arrested for passing intelligence to a foreign power, a crime punishable by up to 30 years in jail.
Evidence found at his home in Paris raised concerns that he may have planned to organize events causing destabilization during the Olympics. He was found with an identity card for an elite unit of the Russian special forces under the command of the FSB.
Before moving to France in 2010, he worked in finance and later enrolled in a Paris cooking school. He worked at a Michelin-star restaurant in Courchevel, popular among the Russian elite. Despite claiming to be a private chef, he appeared in Russian reality and cooking shows, producing cooking tutorials for social media.
In May, Western intelligence services intercepted a call he made to his Russian handler. The Russian Embassy in Paris has requested clarification from French authorities regarding his arrest.
