UNHCR Reports Four Survivors Found After Boat Capsizes off Yemen Coast

Tragedy struck off the coast of Taiz governorate as a boat carrying at least 45 people capsized due to strong winds and overcrowding, leaving only four survivors, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The incident highlighted the dangers faced by those making perilous journeys between Yemen and Africa. The UNHCR is working alongside the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to assist survivors and address their protection needs.

The route between Yemen and the Horn of Africa has become a common path for refugees and migrants, with many fleeing conflict and seeking better opportunities in Gulf countries. However, the journey remains one of the most hazardous migration routes, with 1,860 recorded deaths and disappearances since 2014.

Recent tragedies in the region include a boat capsizing off Shabwah governorate, resulting in the deaths of 49 people, and two shipwrecks off Djibouti claiming the lives of at least 62 individuals.
