The U.S. Defense Department has revealed accounting errors amounting to $2 billion in military aid sent to Ukraine, as per a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on July 25. This follows a previous announcement of a $6.2 billion overestimation in arms value to Ukraine, bringing the total unspent sum to $8.2 billion.
The Pentagon faces challenges in accurately estimating the cost of defense articles shipped to Ukraine due to lack of clear definitions and guidance. Despite the errors, an additional $2 billion in weapons will be sent to Ukraine to cover approved aid by President Joe Biden.
The recent military aid package worth $150 million includes critical capabilities like air defense interceptors and artillery ammunition from U.S. stocks. With Biden’s final months in office, there is optimism for increased support from the U.S. for Ukraine’s defense.
