The Government Approves Long-Awaited Defamation Law Overhaul
After years of anticipation, the Irish government has finally approved legislation to revamp the country’s defamation laws. The new bill, set to be published next week, includes crucial changes such as the abolition of juries in High Court defamation actions.
Media organizations have long been advocating for updates to the 2009 legislation, and the approved bill also aims to address Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPS) and provide a defense for live broadcasts against defamation claims.
Minister for Justice Helen McEntee emphasized the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression and access to justice while tackling issues like transient retail defamation. The legislation is expected to streamline the legal process and provide a more cost-effective approach for defamation cases, particularly in the Circuit Court.
The bill, a legislative priority for the Government, is slated to be enacted by Christmas, pending any unforeseen general election disruptions.
