BRUSSELS – At the recent NATO summit in Washington, the focus was on the war in Ukraine and the upcoming U.S. presidential election. However, behind the scenes, NATO military planners have been busy assessing the significant cost of overhauling Europe’s defense capabilities. Plans for this overhaul were agreed upon last year, as concerns over Russian aggression have been on the rise.
Officials have been meticulously studying the minimum defense requirements needed to achieve these plans, which have been recently sent to national governments. These requirements highlight the deficiencies in NATO armies and give an estimate of the billions of euros needed to address them. NATO intends to establish these requirements as mandatory targets for individual governments by autumn 2025, during a scheduled meeting of defense ministers.
