The Laos government is leveraging the China-Laos Railway to enhance agricultural exports to China in a sustainable way. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, in collaboration with ACIAR and GGGI, is working on the project “Assessing Policy Enhancements for Sustainable Agriculture Linked to the China-Laos Railway” to increase the export of key products like cassava, rubber, bananas, sugarcane, and cattle.

This initiative aims to provide policy recommendations for utilizing the railway effectively for boosting exports while promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Laos. In the first five months of 2024, the railway transported 2.3 million tons of freight, indicating a 31 percent increase from the same period in 2023.

With strategic partnerships and a focus on sustainable practices, Laos is set to capitalize on the China-Laos Railway to strengthen its agricultural export market and foster economic growth.
