A freight train sets off for the Lao capital Vientiane via the China-Laos Railway from the International Railway Port of Nanning, of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, April 2, 2022.

The Laos government aims to increase agricultural exports to China through the China-Laos Railway in a sustainable manner. The collaboration between the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) will focus on enhancing policies for agricultural exports to China.

The project “Assessing Policy Enhancements for Sustainable Agriculture Linked to the China-Laos Railway” seeks to provide policy recommendations for utilizing the railway effectively and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Laos. Key products for export include cassava, rubber, bananas, sugarcane, and cattle, with a reported 31 percent increase in freight transported via the railway in 2024 compared to the previous year.
