Unrest in Karachi: Traders and Business Community Protest High Electricity Bills
In a bold move, the Traders and Business community of Karachi have announced the closure of markets to protest against the inflated electricity bills. The decision, led by Faheem Noori of the All Sadr Alliance of Market and Mall Association, involves shutting down markets from 12 PM to 3 PM as a form of protest. If no action is taken to address their concerns, they plan to escalate the protests with demonstrations outside the markets.
The trigger for this action was the steep rise in electricity and capacity charges, prompting an earlier announcement to close Sadr markets. An emergency meeting scheduled for Friday will determine the next steps in response to the high electricity tariffs. Noori highlighted the unbearable financial strain on traders due to current electricity rates and urged the government to intervene by reducing the tariffs.
