Japan and Sweden’s defense ministers have agreed to enhance defense equipment and technology cooperation to tackle growing security challenges. In a meeting in Stockholm, Japan’s Minoru Kihara expressed support for Sweden’s decision to join NATO, marking a significant shift from their traditional policies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Both ministers committed to strengthening bilateral ties by supporting Ukraine and increasing high-level defense exchanges. Japan has been actively deepening its relationship with NATO to address security threats in the Indo-Pacific region and Europe, especially amidst China’s military activities and the conflict in Ukraine.
Prior to the meeting in Sweden, Kihara, along with counterparts from Britain and Italy, reaffirmed their dedication to jointly developing a next-generation fighter jet by 2035. This collaboration signifies a strong commitment to enhancing defense capabilities and cooperation.
The partnership between Japan and Sweden highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing complex security challenges and promotes a more secure and stable global environment.
