Italy, Niger’s final Western ally

Italy, Niger’s final Western ally

General Figliuolo and Ambassador Guariglia in Niamey to meet Nigerien leaders, on March 9, 2024.

Western military forces are withdrawing from Niger post-coup, with Germany being the latest country to announce the withdrawal of its soldiers. In the vacuum left behind, Niger has turned to Russia, Turkey, and Iran for support, with negotiations for uranium supply ongoing. Despite this, Italy remains engaged in training and advisory missions in Niger to combat illegal immigration, training over 9,000 Nigerien soldiers.

Anticolonial rhetoric

Italy has taken a diplomatic approach post-coup, maintaining relations with Niger while some nations push for military intervention. Italy’s stance aims to avoid being perceived as ‘new colonizers’ and emphasizes the importance of diplomatic solutions.
