Iran’s Foreign Ministry has taken action after the British government’s decision to extradite an Iranian national to the US for allegedly skirting sanctions. The UK ambassador was summoned to Iran on Wednesday, where the director general of Consular Affairs of the Foreign Ministry expressed a strong protest against the illegal detention and extradition. Efforts are underway to secure the release of the detained individual through diplomatic channels in Tehran and London.
The Iranian citizen, Saeid Haji Agha Mousaei, 53, made his initial court appearance in Chicago after being extradited from Britain for US export control charges. He is accused of participating in a conspiracy to evade US export restrictions and transship advanced electronic testing technology to Iran via third-party countries.
This is not the first time Iranians have been arrested by the US on similar charges. In 2021, 10 Iranian nationals were charged for disguising $300 million in transactions to evade US sanctions. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between the US, Iran, and other countries over sanctions and export control violations.
