The Ground Self-Defense Force is exploring the possibility of creating a firing range on the remote island of Minamitorishima in Tokyo for surface-to-ship missile training. GSDF Chief of Staff Gen. Yasunori Morishita revealed this plan during a press conference, stating that discussions are underway with local communities to potentially begin missile training on the island by 2026.
Minamitorishima, Japan’s easternmost island situated approximately 2,000 kilometers southeast of Honshu, currently houses a Maritime SDF base and Japan Meteorological Agency personnel. The establishment of a firing range on this remote island would provide an ideal location for the GSDF to conduct essential training exercises.
