Former Uvalde officer pleads not guilty Adrian Gonzales, a former Uvalde school police officer involved in a slow response to the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, pleaded not guilty to charges of abandoning and failing to protect children who were killed and wounded during a court appearance on Thursday.

Teary-eyed family members watched as Gonzales was arraigned, with some expressing disappointment that only two officers were indicted in connection to the tragedy.

Charges against the officers include a lack of action leading to the death and injury of children and teachers at the school.

Both Gonzales and former Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo, who also faces charges, were released on bond after their indictments.

Criticism of the police response and calls for accountability have been a focal point in the aftermath of the school shooting, one of the worst in U.S. history.

This indictment marks a rare instance of law enforcement officers facing charges for their actions during a shooting incident on school grounds.
