The Cross River State House of Assembly has taken a stand against illegal mining activities by migrants in Okwa 1 and 2, and Ukwango communities in Boki Local Government Area. The lawmakers, led by Member Bette Obi, raised concerns about the encroachment of Fulanis in the area, who have been engaging in illicit gold mining, threatening the natural resources and safety of the residents.
The Assembly called on the State Government to intervene and stop these activities, emphasizing the need to protect the communities and their resources. Members highlighted the negative impact of illegal mining, urging security agencies to take action promptly.
In response, the Speaker applauded the Assembly for their unity in addressing the issue and pledged to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities. He urged traditional leaders and youth to maintain peace and avoid violent confrontations.
The lawmakers affirmed their trust in the responsive administration of Governor Bassey Otu, believing that the government will prioritize the welfare of its citizens. They also proposed deploying security forces to arrest and prosecute illegal miners, while engaging advocacy groups to educate community leaders on the dangers of allowing such activities.
