Typhoon Gaemi Hits Taiwan, Causes Widespread Damage

Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center reported that a cargo ship sank after Typhoon Gaemi passed over the island, resulting in nine crew members from Myanmar going missing. The freighter with a Tanzanian flag sank off the Kaohsiung Harbor coast. Schools, offices, and flights were closed as the typhoon made landfall in Taiwan, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding to the island. Gaemi, the strongest storm in 8 years, led to evacuations, flight cancellations, and halted railway operations. The typhoon is also expected to impact southeastern China. Meanwhile, chipmaker TSMC continues production, and China has suspended passenger trains to minimize the storm’s impact. In the Philippines, Gaemi caused 20 deaths.
