Arkansas abortion rights advocates are hopeful after the state Supreme Court ordered the secretary of state to count signatures for an anti-forced pregnancy constitutional amendment. Despite initial challenges by Secretary John Thurston, the court ruled to begin counting signatures collected by volunteer canvassers.
The petition, led by Arkansans for Limited Government (AFLG), gathered over 101,000 signatures, surpassing the 90,704 threshold for the November ballot. However, the fate of signatures collected by paid workers remains unclear. AFLG remains optimistic, stating that the people’s will prevailed in the fight for abortion rights.
The proposed amendment would protect abortion services up to 18 weeks of fertilization, including cases of rape, incest, or fatal fetal anomaly. While the court’s decision is a positive step, further rulings may be needed to complete the verification process. AFLG continues to advocate for democracy, believing that “The People Rule.”
