윤석열 대통령이 새로 신설하는 대통령실 저출생수석비서관에 유혜미 한양대 경제금융학부 교수를 내정한 것으로 전해졌다.
여권 고위 관계자는 25일 “윤석열 대통령의 재가만 앞둔 상태로, 이르면 오늘 오후 발표할 가능성이 있다”고 말했다. 유 교수가 저출생수석으로 임명되면 대통령실 수석비서관급 이상 참모진 가운데 유일한 여성이다.
유 교수는 서울대 경제학부를 졸업하고, 미국 유학길에 올라 로체스터대 대학원에서 경제학 박사 학위를 받았다. 이후 뉴욕주립대 버펄로대학 경제학과 조교수를 거쳐 현재 한양대 경제금융학부 교수로 재직하고 있다. 남편은 석병훈 이화여대 경제학과 교수로, 초등학교에 다니는 쌍둥이 자녀를 둔 ‘워킹맘’이다.
대통령실은 ‘40대 워킹맘’을 우선 검토하라는 윤 대통령 의중에 따라 두 달 가까이 적임자를 찾지 못하고 인선을 지연해오다 최종적으로 유 교수를 낙점한 것으로 전해졌다.
앞서 윤 대통령은 지난 5월9일 취임 2주년 기자회견에서 사회부총리급 저출산대응기획부(가칭)를 신설하겠다고 밝혔고, 같은 달 13일 대통령실에 저출생수석실 설치를 지시한 바 있다.

Her husband is a professor of Economics at Ewha Womans University, and together they are working parents to twins attending elementary school.
President Yoon’s preference for a “working mom” in her 40s led to the selection of Professor Yoo after a prolonged search for a suitable candidate. This decision comes after President Yoon announced plans to establish a high-level task force to address low birth rates and ordered the setting up of a special office for low birth rates in the presidential office.
