Trash Balloons from North Korea Land Near South Korean Presidential Office
A recent incident has caught the attention of the Presidential Security Service in South Korea, as balloons carrying trash from North Korea landed near the government complex in the Yongsan area. Fortunately, the objects in the balloons posed no risks to the public.
North Korea has been sending these balloons across the border as retaliation to propaganda campaigns by North Korean defectors and activists in the South. In response, South Korea restarted loudspeaker broadcasts targeting the North. The latest batch of trash-laden balloons was confirmed by South Korea’s military, with the wind direction pushing them towards the northern part of Gyeonggi province.
Since 2022, South Korea’s presidential office has been located in Yongsan, a central district in Seoul. This move was significant as President Yoon Suk Yeol broke with tradition and shifted from the more secluded Blue House.
