New Jersey Democrat Faces Decades in Prison After Conviction for Bribery
United States Senator Bob Menendez has announced his resignation following his conviction on corruption charges, including bribery and acting as an agent for Egypt’s government. The decision comes after intense pressure from fellow Democrats to step down or face expulsion from the Senate.
In a letter, Menendez stated his intention to appeal the verdict but did not want the Senate to be distracted from its work. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will appoint a replacement for Menendez, who has served since 2006 and recently chaired the Foreign Relations Committee.
Menendez, found guilty on 16 counts, faces decades in prison for accepting bribes and attempting to influence US aid to Egypt. His sentencing is scheduled for October 29.
Following his resignation, the Senate’s Democratic majority will be temporarily reduced until a replacement is sworn in. Democratic Representative Andy Kim is favoured to win the Senate seat in November.
Menendez, a long-time advocate for US foreign relations, has had a controversial political career, including a previous ethics violation for accepting gifts in exchange for favours.
