Scholz: “High chance” Kamala Harris wins US election – DW

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Addresses Press Before Summer Break

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held his annual press conference before heading off on summer vacation, where he covered a range of topics and issues. Among the highlights was Scholz confirming his intention to run for chancellor again in the upcoming elections, dismissing speculation of following Joe Biden’s example of stepping down. He also commented on the US elections, hinting at the possibility of Kamala Harris winning.

Scholz emphasized his government’s commitment to meeting NATO’s defense spending target to better equip the military, while ruling out acquiring nuclear weapons for Germany’s defense. He also addressed the issue of deportations of criminals and rejected asylum-seekers, supporting Israel’s right to defend itself amid the conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Despite facing challenges and criticism within his ruling coalition, Scholz expressed optimism about turning things around and regaining support ahead of the next general election. With the German Cabinet recommending a date for the election, Scholz believes the government has made the right decisions in uncertain times.
